Measure God's Promises

If you are renovating your home, you will undoubtedly use a tape measure at a time point in the project. If baking, you would utilize a measuring cup somewhere along the process. If you were in school and tasked with a math assignment, you may need to break out your ruler. Now say you wanted to measure the light from a fixture. Would those tools work? While all those measuring instruments operate in their context, they can not accurately calculate light. To correctly determine the amount of lumens, you need a light meter. What is a light meter? Simply put a light meter measures light. Thus, using a measuring cup from your kitchen or a ruler from your kid's bookbag to measure light would be foolish.

That was Jesus' point when dealing with religious leaders' harsh opposition to His proclaiming and promise to be the light of the world in John 8:12.

So the Pharisees said to Jesus, " 'You are testifying about yourself. Your testimony is not valid.' " 14 'Even if I testify about myself,' Jesus replied, 'my testimony is true, because I know where I came from and where I'm going. But you don't know where I come from or where I'm going. 15 You judge by human standards. I judge no one.' " (John 8:13-15).

Notice that Jesus told the Pharisees and the Scribes that they were using the wrong gauge to measure His astounding statement to be the light of heaven and the world. They used their religious traditions and presuppositions to comprehend Jesus' words, but that never works! See, to grasp what God is saying, especially as it pertains to His perfect promises, we need a valid way to measure, and that tool is faith in God's Word, which results in discernment. To help us along, God will illuminate the Scriptures with His Spirit so we can have a greater and deeper understanding. However, none of this is even remotely possible if we are not followers of Christ and walking in the light. It will be impossible to correctly measure God's Word if we live and walk in the darkness.

Knowing this, let us seek to live in the light because He is the light. By doing so, we will enjoy the fullness of God's promises.
