God's Promise About Giving

God's Promise About Giving | January 9, 2024

There is a story about a good farmer who loved the Lord and believed in stewardship. He was generous, indeed. His friends asked why he gave so much and yet remained so prosperous. "We cannot understand you," his friends said. "Why you seem to give more than the rest of us, and yet you always seem to have greater prosperity." "Oh," said the farmer, "that is easy to explain. You see, I keep shoveling into God's bin, and God keeps shoveling more and more into mine, and God has the bigger shovel."

God's bigger shovel is evident throughout the Bible. Often, this fact of the Scriptures is connected to a promise. For example, the Old Testament prophet Malachi believed and taught this principle of giving. Malachi 3:10 says, "Bring the whole tithe into the storehouse, so that there may be food in My house, and test Me now in this," says the LORD of hosts, "if I will not open for you the windows of heaven and pour out for you a blessing until it overflows."
Billy Graham told of a laborer in the San Joaquin Valley of California who said he and his wife agreed to give one-tenth of their income to the Lord. When they decided, he could get work only about seven months of the year. Afterward, he said he had steady employment, earning nearly twice what he was before.

Over and over again, we see God's bigger shovel in the Scriptures. The hope is that we can trust the Lord and see His shovel at work in our lives. We must be willing to trust God and be faithful managers of what He has already blessed us with.

Luke 6:38 says, "Give, and it will be given to you. They will pour into your lap a good measure--pressed down, shaken together, and running over. For by your standard of measure, it will be measured to you in return."
