Deliver Us From The Evil One

Deliver Us From The Evil One | September 26, 2023

A reality of this life is that we will experience daily temptation. Even Jesus Himself was tempted. Hebrews 4:15 says, "For we do not have a high priest who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses, but one who in every respect has been tempted as we are, yet without sin."

Knowing this, we need to pray as Jesus taught us in Matthew 6:13b, which says, "...but deliver us from the evil one."

By praying this way, you acknowledge that temptation is "not a matter of if, but when!" Therefore, we must appeal to God for resolve and strength to stand firm when the evil attacks come. Sure, we can accomplish some level of success in our power, but those results will be short-lived if we are not entirely relying on God for help. Jesus said in Matthew 26:41, "Watch and pray that you may not enter into temptation. The spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak."

Thus, be quick to ask God to strengthen you against temptation by delivering you from the tricks and lies of the devil. Paul told the churches in the region of Ephesus, "Put on the whole armor of God, that you may be able to stand against the schemes of the devil." (Ephesians 6:11)

And James 4:7 says, "Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you."

All of these verses confirm that temptation is to be taken seriously. A strategy of prayerfully depending on God and submitting to the Lord is necessary if victory is to be had. Remember, your enemy, the devil, is the source of every solicitation of evil you will experience, and like a wild animal, he is lying in the weeds looking to pounce on you, and when he's not doing that, he's on the prowl. First Peter 5:8 says, "Be sober-minded; be watchful. Your adversary, the devil, prowls around like a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour."

Although the evil one is relentless, the forces that are for you are greater than the forces that are against you. Romans 8:37, "No, despite all these things, overwhelming victory is ours through Christ, who loved us."

Stand firm in these truths from Scripture and trust God to deliver you from the evil one.
