All The Days Of My Life

All The Days Of My Life | September 3rd

Perhaps one of the most soul-soothing portions of Scripture in the Bible is Psalm 23. This familiar passage adorns many picturesque scenes and funeral cards and is read at numerous gravesides. However, as comforting as these words of King David are, there is more to these verses than just referencing them at the end of life or adding them as a caption to a great picture.

Like many other faithful believers, being close to God was important to David. As a result, he enjoyed a strong relationship with the Lord. The entire Psalm conveys this understanding. David believed in God's provisions for his life and the Lord's promise that death was just a doorway to eternal life.

An incredible combination of conviction and commitment is attached to the closing of David's Psalm, which sums up his faith and feelings concerning the Lord. These thoughts are put forth in the last verse, which says, "Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life: and I will dwell in the house of the Lord forever" (Psalm 23:6).

David believed God's cover of goodness and mercy would follow him as He followed the Lord. Sometimes we wonder where God's refuge is, but maybe heaven is asking similar questions about us--Where are we? Why aren't we making God's agenda a priority? Why are we letting everything else be more important than His plans and purposes? David had a conviction that God would cover Him in this life and in the life to come. This belief bled into a steadfast commitment to "dwell" in the "house of the Lord."

The word "dwell" means to reside, live, or inhabit. In the Scriptures, the house of the Lord is referred to as the Tabernacle, Temple, or place of reverence and worship and is ultimately symbolic of God's presence. Thus, David's focus was to make being in God's presence His main priority, and we should also. Let us not be fairweather, flaky, or fake with our convictions and commitments to the Lord. May the goal of our life be to "dwell" where God wants us to be "all the days of our life."
