Wisdom Is Your Greatest Wish
Wisdom Is Your Greatest Wish | February 8, 2024
Whether blowing out candles on your birthday cake or something more deep-seated, like an unspoken need, having a wish or two is more common than you may think. Numerous studies and surveys reveal that people typically wish for wealth, health, happiness, self-improvement, fame, and power.
While wish-making may seem more like a fantasy, did you know that God gave a particular character in the Bible the opportunity to request anything he wanted?
What if you could have one wish granted by God? What would it be? Would you wish for a better body, more money, better relationships, or to help others? To answer correctly, let's examine Solomon's conversation with God concerning his one wish.
Second Chronicles 1:7-12, "That night God appeared to Solomon and said to him, 'Ask for whatever you want me to give you.' 8 Solomon answered God, 'You have shown great kindness to David my father and have made me king in his place. 9 Now, Lord God, let your promise to my father David be confirmed, for you have made me king over a people who are as numerous as the dust of the earth.10 Give me wisdom and knowledge, that I may lead this people, for who is able to govern this great people of yours?" 11 God said to Solomon, 'Since this is your heart's desire and you have not asked for wealth, possessions or honor, nor for the death of your enemies, and since you have not asked for a long life but for wisdom and knowledge to govern my people over whom I have made you king,12, therefore, wisdom and knowledge will be given you. And I will also give you wealth, possessions, and honor, such as no king who was before you ever had and none after you will have.' "
Notice that God gave Solomon a blank check, but his wish transcended all the typical responses to such a question. Solomon asked for wisdom, and God blessed that wish.
It's prudent to ask God for wisdom because we need it to make decisions and determine His direction. God not only gave Solomon wisdom, but He also blessed Him with other potential wishes. See, without God's wisdom, we risk making choices that will end in regret and ultimately forfeit other blessings.
