White As Snow
White As Snow | January 19, 2024
Have you ever wondered why snow is white? The reason may surprise you, but there is a scientific explanation. Light is scattered and bounces off the snow's ice crystals because snow is translucent or transparent. Therefore, the reflected light includes all the colors, which, together, look white. Not only is snow pretty when it first appears or fun when you go sledding, have snowball fights, or build your own Frosty, but the white stuff is a beautiful picture of God's grace and forgiveness.
God's people lacked loyalty and obedience throughout the Scriptures, particularly in the Old Testament. One of those examples is highlighted in the first chapter of the prophet Isaiah's message.
Isaiah 1:2 says, "Listen, O heavens! Pay attention, earth! This is what the Lord says: 'The children I raised and cared for have rebelled against me.' "
This rebellion primarily included the oppression of the poor, the mistreatment of widows and orphans, and insincere worship and self-centered prayers. As a result, God said in Isaiah 1:12-15, "When you come to worship me, who asked you to parade through my courts with all your ceremony? 13 Stop bringing me your meaningless gifts; the incense of your offerings disgusts me! As for your celebrations of the new moon and the Sabbath and your special days for fasting— they are all sinful and false. I want no more of your pious meetings. 14 I hate your new moon celebrations and your annual festivals. They are a burden to me. I cannot stand them! 15 When you lift up your hands in prayer, I will not look. Though you offer many prayers, I will not listen, for your hands are covered with the blood of innocent victims."
While all of these were true, God still offered His people an opportunity to get right with Him and used snow to illustrate His goodness. Isaiah 1:18 says, "Come now, let's settle this," says the Lord. "Though your sins are like scarlet, I will make them as white as snow. Though they are red like crimson, I will make them as white as wool."
God wants to do the same in our lives. There may be disobedience or mistrust in your life. Maybe you are in the season of wondering or insincerity with God. Whatever the reason, God stands ready to make your sins white as snow. Therefore, every time you see snow, let it be a reminder to thank God for His forgiveness.
