Give Us This Day Our Daily Bread

Give Us This Day Our Daily Bread | September 23, 2023

On the block here in Staten Island, where Crossroads Church is located, we have pizzerias, bagel stores, bakeries, smoothie shops, and various restaurants. Also, within a reasonable walking distance are several supermarkets. So, there are plenty of places with food options, and I assume your community or town is similar.

"Give Us This Day Our Daily Bread" from Matthew 6:11 can seem somewhat outdated for those with readily available food. However, to dismiss this part of the prayer would be a tremendous oversight. First, consider the context. People in those times lived hand to mouth, meal to meal, day to day. Many were also impoverished and didn't know where their next meal would come from! Thus, "daily bread" represented a prayer request for their most pressing need. Today, this same prayer is synonymous with our most tangible need. While it may not be bread, it could be medically, financially, emotionally, or relationally related. See, your daily bread can include your family, a health concern, an upcoming test, or a game. The point is that we need to bring pressing needs for ourselves and others to the Lord in prayer because He cares about us. First Peter 5:7 says, "Give all your worries and cares to God, for he cares about you."

What are you worrying about right now? What cares have you concerned? Remember that before we even ask, God already knows what we need. Matthew 6:8b, "...for your Father knows what you need before you ask him."

With this in mind, come to your heavenly Father daily with your prayer requests. Bring your needs, dreams, and fears to Him. But remember, do it every day. He often gives you enough for the moment, day, or season, just as He did in the story of Elijah and the Widow at Zarephath (First Kings 17:7-16.)

Don't forget, God is faithful! Therefore, trust your Heavenly Father, keep praying, and leave the results to Him.’
