Seeking God's Peace On Election Day

Seeking God's Peace On Election Day | November 4, 2025
On this Election Day—Tuesday, November 4, 2025 — there is considerable concern and some confusion in certain parts of the country, particularly New York. A series of recent events and certain candidates have created feelings of fear and discouragement. In these challenging times, how can we effectively move forward while honoring the gift of democracy that God has entrusted to us?
The answer lies in seeking God's peace, which can only be achieved through Scripture and prayer. One of the oldest civic-religious traditions in American history is the practice of listening to an "Election Day" sermon. From 1634 to 1884, (which included the thirteen British American colonies), Election Day was considered a holy day. Courts closed, towns gathered for worship, and a designated pastor delivered an "Election Day Sermon" to the governor, legislature, and citizens before they voted.
It's important to note that these gatherings were not campaign rallies. Instead, they featured messages from the Bible that emphasized justice, virtue, unity, and the recognition of God's sovereignty over nations.
Founding-era giants like founder and framers of America like Samuel Adams and John Hancock sat under sermons that quoted Locke, Scripture, and Roman history. A famous and impactful point was made by Rev. Samuel West of Boston during a May 29, 1776 sermon that is said to have lit the fuse for the Declaration six weeks later said, "When rulers become wolves, the people have a divine right to resist."
In every election cycle, there are candidates who are like wolves in sheep's clothing. This can be seen through their false promises and "Cheshire Cat" appearances. Therefore, we should seek God's peace and entrust our lives to Him because no matter what, He has the finale say.
The Message Translation of Proverbs 16:1 says, "Mortals make elaborate plans, but God has the last word."
Isaiah 26:3 promises that if we focus our minds on the Lord, (rather than on politicians or parties), His perfect peace will follow us: "You keep him in perfect peace whose mind is stayed on you, because he trusts in you."
With this in mind we pray for each candidate to know Christ and seek God's guidance. We also pray for God to thwart any plans of evil that attempt to undermine our blessing of democracy.
